Eleni Papachristou is a graduate of the Department of Biology at the University of Athens and holds a PhD from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). In her doctoral thesis, titled ” Studying the HCV dispersal in Greece: search for rare strains and development of determination methods” she successfully developed two methods for the laboratory detection of Hepatitis C virus. Furthermore, she is a graduate of the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at NKUA, where she completed a thesis titled “Study of linguistic change using phylogenetic analysis and evolutionary models from the science of Biology.”
Her research interests focus on the detection, quantification, and genotyping of viruses using molecular biology methods, as well as the analysis of viral genomes using both classical genotyping methods (Sanger) and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques. She serves as the Supervisor of the laboratory team at the National Retrovirus Reference Center (N.R.R.C.), where all specialized tests for the detection, confirmation, monitoring of HIV infection and the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy are performed. She has participated in a significant number of research programs conducted at the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics and is a member of the working group responsible for drafting the National Strategic Action Plan for HIV.
