The National Retrovirus Reference Center (N.R.R.C.) was founded in 1989 and is located at the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

With more than 35 years of continuous operation, it is a laboratory specializing in the clinical diagnosis of viruses and has successfully dealt with many of the emergency health needs that arose in Greece (AIDS pandemic, influenza epidemics, Olympic Games, SARS CoV-2 pandemic).

As a Reference Laboratory, it accepts patient samples from health care units, throughout Greece, providing high quality services in the monitoring of patients with HIV infection. The N.R.R.C. uses accredited methods, which are carried out by experienced and highly qualified personnel.

In addition, the N.R.R.C. has the facilities and the know-how to perform a multitude of molecular tests for a wide range of pathogens.

Its research contribution has led to numerous publications in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals worldwide.

According to Ministerial Decision D1a/G.P.ec. 32918/2025 – Government Gazette B 4155/30.07.2025, the N.R.R.C. is a recognized Reference Centre for HIV in Greece.

Since 2023, the N.R.R.C. has been accredited by ESYD (Hellenic Accreditation System) in accordance with the International Standard ISO 15189.
