«National Action Plan for HIV»: Programmatic agreement N.K.U.A. and Ministry of Health

A programmatic agreement on the Greek “National Action Plan for HIV” was signed on March 13, 2024 between the Greek Ministry of Health and the National Retrovirus Reference Center (NRRC) of the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics (DHEMS), in the presence of the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Prof. G. Siasos, the Alternate Minister of Health Dr. E. Agapidakis, the Chair of DHEMS Prof. P. Lagiou and the Scientific Coordinator of NRRC Assoc. Professor G. Magiorkinis.
The Greek “National Action Plan for HIV” will identify Public Health and Health Care System objectives for improving diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of HIV infections in Greece, with a view to the goals set by the World Health Organization for ending the AIDS epidemic.
Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, 84 million people have been infected with HIV and approximately 40 million people have died from HIV/AIDS globally. Approximately 38 million people were living with HIV in 2021. It is estimated that currently 85% of people living with HIV are aware of their status. To reach the global target of 95%, an additional 4.0 million people living with HIV need become aware of their HIV status. By the end of 2021, 28.7 million people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) worldwide.
