Giota Touloumi, PhD, is Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). She has an MSc degree in Biostatistics (LSHTM, London University, UK), a doctoral thesis in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics (Medical School, University of Athens) and a PhD in Biostatistics (LSHTM, London University, UK). She teaches Biostatistics in the undergraduate students of the Medical and the Dentist School as well as of the Department of Biology of the NKUA, Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Generalized Linear Models and other courses in postgraduate students of the NKUA whereas she is the director of the interdepartmental MSc on Biostatistics and Health Data Science.
She is a member of several scientific societies, participates in several scientific committees and she is an active member of several European or International networks including the International Network for Strategic Initiatives in Global HIV Trials (INSIGHT), Antiretroviral Therapy Cohort Collaboration (ART-CC), HIV Cohort Analysed Using Structural Approaches to Longitudinal data (HIV-CAUSAL), HEP-CAUSAL, CASCADE: HIV Seroconversion in Europe and the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC). She was the PI of the statistical/data management centre of the Nationwide multicentre cohort study HEPNET.Greece for >10 years, while she is the PI of the multicentre cohort study Athens Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (AMACS); the Nationwide Health Examination survey EMENO (National Morbidity and Risk Factors Survey); the Hprolipsis [a Health Examination Survey of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV in the general and vulnerable populations (migrants/Roma)] and the Design and development of an automatic detection system for epidemic outbreaks and assessment of personalized infection risk of viral hepatitis B and C and HIV infection (Hippocrates Epidemic Detection System). Through the INSIGHT network, she coordinates in Greece the funded by the NIH, USA clinical trials for investigational therapeutics for COVID-19. She has participated as the PI of the Greek partner in several research programs funded by the EU, the ECDC or the NIH USA.
Her research interests are focused on the development of novel statistical methods for analysing health data; infectious diseases epidemiology focusing mainly on the HIV infection and on viral hepatitis B and C; risk factors for chronic diseases focused mainly on cardiovascular diseases; clinical trials for infectious diseases including COVID-19; Public Health, and on environmental epidemiology. She is the author or coauthor of more than 250 scientific papers published in peer review English speaking Journals. Her work is cited more than 35,000 times, according to Google Scholar and he has an h-index=82 and i10-index=210 (Google Scholar, 10/2022).
